Recently, the Panama Canal has once again become a hot topic in the shipping industry, and the comments of US President-elect Donald Trump withdrawing the canal have also plunged him into the vortex of public opinion.

Previously, the Panama Canal due to a long drought, the passage of the canal restrictions are lifted, but still a large number of ships have not returned, the ship traffic has not reached expectations.

Recently, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced the ship capacity for December.

According to the latest data released by ACP, the number of ships on the Panama Canal reached 1,059 vessels in December 2024, of which 160 were large container ships, up 6% from November, but still does not meet the full daily quota of 36.

Of these, 279 new locks were passed through the Panama Canal, up 3% from November.

It should be noted that after the lifting of the restrictions, the traffic of the new Panama locks has not returned to pre-drought levels.

It is understood that the wide-body Panamax bulk carriers that passed through the new Panama locks did not return in large numbers, with only six passing through the Panama Canal in December 2024.

By comparison, there were 57 ships in the same period in 2022. In addition, some LNG carriers prefer detour routes with longer ranges but lower shipping rates.

Only two LNG carriers passed through the Panama Canal in December 2024, compared with an average of 27 per month before the drought, and the canal did not fill all available slots. Previously, ACP announced that from January 1,2025.
