CMA CGM has surpassed Maersk to become the largest carrier in the trans-Pacific region.
Alphaliner Maersk's trans-Pacific market share, citing a November survey, is now slightly lower than in the same month in 2023 13.1%, compared with 13.2% from its French rivals.
Cosco followed up in third place with 12.9%.
Overall, trans-Pacific routes totaled 5.37 million TEU last month, up 4.2 percent year on year. There are conflicting reports about the health of the trade routes linking Asia and North America.
Cross-Pacific routes have been under pressure since mid-November, with rates from Asia to the West Coast falling from $5,000 per FEU to $4,000 per FEU, but recent spot quotes showed $3,000 or less per FEU, bank Jefferies analysts said.
More optimistic are experts from the booking platform Freightos, who believe that early loading ahead of a possible strike on the US East Coast in January and expected tariff increases next year have kept trans-Pacific shipping rates high since December.
